Émile-Justin Merlot, or Émile Merlot, ( 1839 -1900) French painter. A student of Eugène Lavieille and Henri Harpignies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon from 1864 to 1899. He became a member of the Société des artistes français. A landscape and animal painter, he won an honorable mention in 1883, a second-class medal in 1892 and a bronze medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He also decorated ceramics for the Haviland firm. Some of his works are exhibited in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
In this rare piece, the scene has retained all its bright, luminous colors, making it a sculpture in its own right, or even a painting. High-quality work in very good condition, a few minor scratches due to age.
