Oil on canvas depicting a young boy in profile, wearing a white shirt with one shoulder bare, against a background of gray and silver tones applied with broad, expressive brushstrokes. Berthe Burgkan (1885-1936) was a French painter trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Gustave Boulanger, then at the Académie Julian under Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury. She received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1885 and at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889—the same year this work was created. She exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1878 to 1920 and became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1883.
