Entourage d'Antoine Etex, Cain And His Race Cursed By God
oil on panel, 33 x 24 cm. The painting is based on Antoine Etex's sculpted composition, the plaster of which was designed in Rome in 1831/1832.
The work is inspired by the biblical scene of the first murder: that of Abel by his brother Cain. It was first shown in plaster at the Salon de Paris in 1833, then in marble in 1839, and proved a great success. It has since been exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon.
Etex's success established him as a leader of the generation of Romantic sculptors of the 1830s-1840s and, according to newspapers such as Le Temps, inoculated the "biblical disease"within the Académie de France in Rome.
