Gaspard Grégoire (1751-1846) Floral Compositions
Artist: Gaspard Grégoire (1751-1846)
Gaspard Grégoire (1751-1846) Floral compositions , Rare pair of "Velours Grégoire", after paintings by Jan van Huysum (1682-1749), in gilt bronze frames, 12 x 10.5 cm. On verso labels mentioning Mr A Riboud Lyon.
From a family of silk merchants, Gaspard Grégoire was one of the most fascinating personalities in the applied arts of early 19th-century industry. His astonishing technique and extremely detailed works first made him a name in Aix, then in Paris, where he worked under the protectorate of the Comte d'Angiviller, director of the Administration des Bâtiments du Roi.
Grégoire's unique method involves applying paint directly to the warp before weaving begins. As a result, his portraits are neither printed, as on plain fabric, nor shaped, as would have been the case with the "métier à la grande tire". This innovation enabled Grégoire to achieve extraordinary finesse of line and subtlety of color. Many of his works are now in the Musée des Tissues in Lyon, Aix-en-Provence and Marseille.
