This genre scene in the forest, depicting a hunting dog spotting woodcock eggs, is the work of the famous Belgian-Dutch animal painter Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (1821 in Amsterdam - 1909 in Ixelles). A pupil of her father, the painter Josephus-Augustus Knip (1777-1847), she began depicting animals at an early age, especially dogs and cats. Later, she devoted herself mainly to depicting cats of all kinds in luxurious settings.
Henriette Ronner-Knip was a member of the Cercle des femmes peintres, a Belgian association of women artists, which organized collective exhibitions of works by female artists from 1888 to 1893.
