Attilio Codognato. Cameo Ring On Neoclassical Agate - Young Hercules 18-carat Yellow Gold - 20th Century
Cameo: approx. 30 × 40 mm | Mounting: 18-carat yellow gold | Finger size: 56 |
Total weight: approx. 27 g
Cameo: first half of the 19th century
Markable cameo ring by the renowned Venetian firm Codognato. The large oval cameo, cut in two-layered agate, features a bust of a young Hercules in profile to the right: idealized features - finely arched eyebrow, straight nose, powerful jaw - framed by abundant tight curly hair, the distinctive attribute by which the hero is recognized in Hellenistic and Roman sculptural tradition. The milky-white relief figure stands out authoritatively against a deep gray-brown background, evoking the great marble portraits of antiquity - foremost among them the type of Heracles spread across the Mediterranean world in the wake of Alexander's conquests. The composition exudes the heroic idealism of neoclassical glyptics at its most accomplished.
The architecturally assertive 18-carat yellow gold setting features a broad, imposing bezel set on tapered, fluted shoulders, with stepped geometric decoration around the rim, centered by a cabochon - a formal vocabulary fully in the spirit of Codognato's own aesthetic, between Grand Tour romanticism and twentieth-century goldsmithing virtuosity. Signed Codognato on the ring.
