Carved Walnut Rhone Valley Wedding Box, 19th Century
Charming carved walnut wedding chest from the Rhone Valley, made in the 19th century in the spirit of Louis XV furniture of the 16th century.
In tomb form, this remarkable work of folk art testifies to high quality craftsmanship. All sides are richly carved with horns of plenty garnished with flowers and fruit, vegetal motifs as well as finely-treated imp heads.
The crosspieces are carved in the same way as the fronts.
The curved crosspieces and four small shell feet accentuate the elegance of its silhouette. The box retains its bronze handle and original lock with key, the whole being perfectly functional.
The object is presented in a very elegant way.
The object is presented in a remarkable state of preservation. There are no wormholes, restorations or accidents to report. It also benefits from a beautiful waxed patina highlighting the quality of its walnut and the finesse of its carving.
A very fine example of the folk art of the
Rhone Valley, both decorative and loaded with symbolism, the horns of plenty evoking prosperity and marital happiness.
