The Italian War of 1859, or Second Italian War of Independence, pitted the alliance of the Second French Empire (Napoleon III) and the Kingdom of Sardinia (Victor-Emmanuel II) against the Austrian Empire. Triggered by the Plombières Accords, the conflict ended in a decisive Franco-Piedmontese victory, and led to the annexation of Lombardy by Piedmont. France, through secret agreements, in exchange for the cession of Nice and Savoy to the French Empire. Cavour's strategy was to provoke Austria into declaring war, thereby justifying French intervention. Falling into the trap, Austria sent an ultimatum, which Piedmont rejected. Hostilities began on April 29, 1859, when the Austrians crossed the Ticino river.
