Workshop Of Leandro Da Ponte, Leandro Bassano ( 1557 - 1622)
Workshop of Leandro Da Ponte, Leandro Bassano (Bassano del Grappa 1557 - Venice 1622)
"Saint Jerome"
Oil on canvas
93 x 77 cm
This work is inspired by a painting by Leandro Bassano, from a private collection of unknown location, held at the Zeri Photo Library and previously attributed by Roberto Longhi.
After his initial training, he became assistant to his father, Jacopo, from 1575. He moved to Venice in 1588, where he remained until his death in 1622. He prospered in the lagoon and led a life of luxury. In terms of painting, after an initial period faithful to his father's style, he moved away from the traditional family style to adopt a technique characterized by soothing flat tints of color, large surfaces in compact impasto and diffused light. He was a highly talented portraitist, probably thanks to his studies with Passarotti and Pourbus, and achieved results comparable to those of Moroni in terms of expressiveness and psychological finesse. His general culture, in addition to a thorough knowledge of 16th-century Venetian painting, included the Mannerism of Federico Zuccari and the Flemish painting of Abraham Bloemaert and Pauwels Franck, known as Paolo Fiammingo. Among his many pupils, his nephew Jacopo Apollonio stood out. Although faithful to the style of his relatives, he enjoyed considerable success in the Veneto region, thanks in particular to his keen naturalistic sense and vibrant use of color.
