Polychrome, Mixed-media Cubist Sculpture (in The Studio). Russia, Early 20th Century.
This polychrome sculpture, which, when viewed from the inside, is composed of plaster, paper, and cotton, dates to the early 1900s and echoes the fragile, immediate materiality of Bocioni’s early Futurist sculptures. The vivid, Cubist-inspired polychromy forms a geometric mosaic that outlines a Cubo-Futurist face. The design, the shape of the face, and the composition do not appear to be attributable to an Italian artist; the mystery of its authorship leads us to consider the “rainbow head” as likely belonging to the circle of Russian Suprematism, founded by Kazimir Malevich.
