Sevres Porcelain Cup And Mug - From The Service Du Gobelet Du Roi - 18th Century

Artist: Manufacture Royale De Sevres
RARE SEVRES TENDER PORCELAIN CUP - From the SERVICE DU GOBELET DU ROI de LOUIS XVI au CHATEAU DE VERSAILLES - Ep. XVIIIe

Individual container designed for drinking liquids, usually hot, the cup has a vertical side handle. It is cylindrical in shape, with a flat base resting on a slight heel. Its matching saucer, also with a flat base, rests on a discreet heel and has a slightly sloping rim.

The term "litron" cup was coined by the Vincennes factory around 1752. This model was inspired by the choppe, a popular vessel at the time, in response to the rise of hot beverages such as tea, coffee and chocolate in Europe.

TENDER Porcelain.

The cup and matching saucer feature a white background with polychrome decoration, Gobelet du Roi service, with polychrome decoration composed of a rose in a medallion encircled by a garland of barbels around a carmine fillet; the wing decorated with myrtle leaves and garland of barbels around a carmine fillet.

Commenced in 1782, the service known as the Gobelet du Roi was delivered to Versailles on May 11, 1783, supplemented by supplements each year between 1784 and 1791. The decoration is described in the registers of painters' and enfourneurs' work kept in the archives of the Manufacture de Sèvres as "guirlandes de barbeaux", accompanied by the designation: Service du Roy (Arch. M.N.S. Vj 2, fo 141 and Vj 2, fo 53)."

The Château de Versailles today preserves several pieces from this service. Other elements are preserved at the Musée du Louvre, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Bowes Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum or the Schloss Fasanerie in Fulda.

Plates from the famous Service du Gobelet du Roi de Sèvres are relatively regularly encountered today, or at least more so than other forms. This is due to the importance of the deliveries made for the royal table and the officers attached to the "salles neuves" at Versailles. In fact, the archives mention considerable orders for plates, sometimes in the hundreds, as these were the very heart of the service.

In contrast, shapes intended for drinking - and especially litron cups - were produced in much smaller quantities. Unlike plates, which are easier to store and display, litron cups have now all but disappeared, which explains their extreme rarity with the Gobelet du Roi decoration.
