Breton painting from 1880-1900 depicting a young peasant woman counting her few coins from the sale of apples.
Beautiful intimate scene testifying to a formerly modest Brittany where it was often necessary for families to make their children work both on the farm and in the markets, as here with our little apple seller on her low wall by the sea.
This painting comes from an estate in Pontivy, Narcisse Chaillou* was a family friend, as were Germain David Nillet and Paul Fouillen later on.
Two paintings by Germain David Nillet will be offered for sale on my gallery.
Sold with a frame that is not original and needs to be replaced and does not cover the canvas sufficiently, in short direction the framer.

*Narcisse Chaillou, born March 12, 1835 in Nantes and died October 16, 1916 in Pontivy.
François Narcisse Chaillou was a painter known for his genre scenes. He moved to Paris in 1880 and became a pupil of Léon Bonnat, Ernest Hébert and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He moved to Brittany in 1880. Narcisse Chaillou lived in Baud (where he had a painting studio), Rennes and Pontivy.
Narcisse Chaillou painted many portraits and landscapes, including scenes of Parisian life during the 1870 war. At the 1872 Salon, he exhibited a canvas painted during the siege of Paris in 1870: Un marchand de rats, souvenir du siège de Paris, also known as Le Dépeceur de rats, now in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Saint-Denis.
Paintings by Narcisse Chaillou bear witness to the lives of Parisians and Bretons at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
His works are also held in several other public collections, including those of Rennes, Nantes, Morlaix and Vitré.
The artist bequeathed 43 paintings to the town of Pontivy.
