Saint John the Baptist - Polychrome oak sculpture, 16th-17th century
Imposing solid oak sculpture depicting Saint John the Baptist as a desert hermit. The saint is depicted standing, left arm raised pointing to heaven ("Ecce Agnus Dei"), holding a scallop shell in his right hand. He wears the beast-skin garment held in place by ropes, in keeping with the iconography of the Precursor.
Vestiges of gilded polychromy on the drapery. Wrought-iron mounting ring on back (placement in niche or church altarpiece).
