Antique Oval Reliquary In Gilded Bronze And Silver Papal States, Rome, 19th Century

The reliquary features a solid oval structure in finely gilded bronze, surmounted by an ornate decoration in the form of a knotted ribbon or bow, which serves as a loop. The inner frame is embellished with rich silver appliqués, embossed and chased with scrollwork and leaf clusters.
In the center, protected by the original glass, the case holds three relics arranged on a background of red patterned silk fabric, each identified by its respective paper scroll with inscriptions in ink:
S. Petri Ap. (St. Peter the Apostle)
S. Dominici C. (St. Dominic of Guzmán, Confessor)
S. Nicolai Ep. C. (St. Nicholas of Bari, Bishop and Confessor)
The piece is duly hallmarked with the Papal States’ chamber marks (Rome Stamp Office) in use between 1815 and 1870, which guarantee its authenticity, the exact geographical area of manufacture, and the silver fineness. The reverse retains the original intact wax seals guaranteeing the integrity of the sacred deposit.
