Central Europe 1480-1530, Corpus Christi In Silver And Vermeil
Artist: Poinçon Illisible
Very early Christi corpus in solid silver and vermeil for the perisonium and hair, dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. There is still a strong Gothic influence in the iconography of this magnificent Renaissance Christ. It is not in cast silver like most early corpora Christi, but is made entirely of repoussé silver. On the back of this sculpture, which normally escapes view, we can see how the master silversmith assembled the various parts. Traces of a partially faded hallmark are also visible. A custom-made base is included in the price.
The geographical origin is not so easy to determine, but it is probably in southern Germany or Austria.
The great difference in quality of finish and detail between the visible face and the back, formerly hidden by the cross, is typical for the period.
