Charming oil on panel by French painter Alexandre-Marie Guillemin (1817-1880), depicting a scene from everyday life in a rustic Breton interior. The artist depicts a family gathered around a pious image affixed to a wardrobe, in an atmosphere imbued with simplicity and devotion. The traditional costumes, regional furnishings and warm treatment of light testify to the painter's interest in genre scenes and popular traditions.

A student of François-Édouard Picot, Alexandre-Marie Guillemin exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1842. He distinguished himself with his interior scenes, depictions of rural life and compositions inspired by the French provinces, particularly Brittany. His work is appreciated for the finesse of his drawing, the accuracy of his observation and the quality of his palette.

The composition presents a fine balance between figures and setting, while the delicate touch and subdued light lend the whole a great sensitivity.
