A very beautiful 19th-century oil on canvas signed by Jules Potvin, depicting an interior scene in which the artist is portrayed in his studio, accompanied by a friend.

The composition immerses us in the intimacy of the painter’s studio. Two figures are depicted in the foreground, seated and gathered around a table, while the space is enlivened by numerous elements that directly evoke artistic activity: canvases, an easel, furniture, frames, and works hanging on the walls.

Light streams in through a large window on the left, subtly illuminating the scene. Here, the artist works with a rich palette of greens, browns, and ochres, punctuated by luminous touches, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere.

The work is particularly interesting for its autobiographical nature, as the painter chose to depict himself in his own work environment. This type of depiction also provides insight into the layout and atmosphere of a 19th-century artist’s studio.

The signature “J. Potvin” is visible in the lower left corner. The painting retains its substantial molded natural wood frame, embellished with a rich gilded stucco frieze, as well as a cartouche bearing the artist’s name.

A distinctive work, particularly appealing to a lover of 19th-century painting, both for its intimate subject matter and for its particularly vivid depiction of the artist’s world.
