17th Portrait Of A Child From The Aldrovandi Colonna Family Emilian School
Portrait of a Child with a Wedding Coat of Arms, Emilian school, 17th century.
Based on the heraldic details of the wedding coat of arms at the top, the child is believed to be the son of an Aldovrandi Marescotti and a Colonna di Paliano, families belonging, in order, to the Bolognese nobility and the Roman nobility.
In the European courts of the 17th century, the primary purpose of a child’s portrait was to celebrate dynastic continuity and the family’s prestige. Children were depicted in luxurious garments identical to those of their parents, featuring stiff collars, tight bodices, and heavy fabrics. The pose was intended to convey dignity, composure, and aristocratic upbringing, limiting the expression of personality in favor of etiquette. Furthermore, the portrait of an infant in swaddling clothes held strong symbolic and devotional value, celebrating infant mortality and the purity of the soul, as well as marking membership in noble families.
In noble families, the newborn was portrayed in swaddling clothes during the first months of life to mark the birth of the offspring, and then transitioned to a "vestina" outfit in the very early years.
Very good condition, in a carved and gilded frame that is not contemporary.
Dimensions
canvas 44 x 33 cm
frame 54 x 63 cm
