Claude Deruet (1588-1660) Marie Madeleine
Artist: Claude Deruet
Marie-Madeleine Claude DERUET (1588-1660)
Oil on oak panel
Dimensions: 64 x 50 cm unframed
Antique frame with inverted profile
Lorraine painter born in Nancy, he was a pupil of Jacques Bellange but soon left for Rome to study the great masters of Italian painting.
In 1621 back in France he was ennobled and made a knight of the Order of Saint-Michel in 1645 by Louis XIII.
He often uses war mythology, combining violence and delicacy to glorify the reckless heroine.
The decorative aspect is dominant in Claude DERUET.
A disciple of Jesus, Mary Magdalene was one of the women who supported Jesus' ministry from their own resources (Gospel according to Luke), implying that she was wealthy.
The painter offers us a portrait of Mary Magdalene with bare shoulders, adorned with magnificent jewels, she holds in one hand the ciborium, in the other her necklace of gold and precious stones from which she is in the process of parting.
She wears a transparent veil held back by a diadem placed on her blond hair, her bowed face reveals a white pearl set in gold in her ear.
This is a woman who will repent and become this biblical figure of devotion and penitence.
