Saint Mary Magdalene - Alabaster Sculpture From The Ménises School Dating From The Very Beginni
Artist: De Menises
Saint Mary Magdalene. An extremely rare Renaissance sculpture from the Melines workshop in Flanders. This workshop is renowned for its small alabaster panels, generally 9 x 12 cm, enhanced with gilding. This fascinating sculpture, of exceptional beauty and quality, measures 32 cm and presents a rare subject: Mary Magdalene holding a book and raising her hand in a gesture of penance. Freestanding alabaster sculptures from the Flemish Renaissance school are extremely rare, even in European museums, and the attribution of their creators remains a subject of debate. An old, healed fracture in no way detracts from its charm or elegance.
