Study Of Two Heads

Artist: Cesare Gennari 1637 - 1688
Cesare Gennari ( Cento 1637 - Bologna 1688),Study of two heads,

Sanguine, watermark with coat of arms decorated di six circles (similar to Heawood no. 783-786).

Provenance

  • Count Alessandro Maggiori (late 18th - early 19th century), Faenza and Rome;
  • G.P. Breschi, Rome;
  • From Dr. Karl Grünwald (1887-1964), Zurich, 1952 (this provenance ed the previous one according to the Landolt typescript catalog), from whom it was acquired da Robert Landolt (as Guercino).

    The strong influence of Guercino, combined with the rather controlled draughtsmanship, particularly visible in the parallel hatching, suggest that this sheet should be given to Guercino's nephew

    Cesare Gennari.

    We are grateful to Nicholas Turner for his assistance in cataloguing this drawing.
