Ferdinand IV Visit To The Eruption Of Vesuvius
Based on historical documents (notably the registers of the Royal Palace of Caserta and the Valerio collection in Geneva), the painting depicts a particularly well-documented historical event: the eruption of Vesuvius on May 11, 1771. The young King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon (January 12, 1751 Naples - January 4, 1825 Naples) - who came to the throne in 1759 and was proclaimed of age in 1767 - was already reigning over Naples. The work is thus precisely set in the second half of the 18th century, probably between the years 1770 and 1780.
