L'amant earned Marguerite Duras the Prix Goncourt 1984 and the Ritz-Paris-Hemingway Prize (best novel published in English) two years later.
The novel was adapted to film by Jean-Jacques Annaud in 1992: L'Amant. Marguerite Duras was not pleased with this film adaptation. Partly for this reason, she decided to rewrite the story in another novel called, L'Amant de la Chine du Nord, released in 1991.
