Natalia Sergueïevna Goncharova (1881-1962), painter, draughts woman naturalized French in 1939. Great-grand niece of Natalia Nikolayevna Goncharova, wife of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin,she began her artistic studies in 1901 in Moscow, where she studied sculpture with F. Volnoukhine and Paul Troubetzkoy (a disciple of AugusteRodin), and painting with Constantin Korovine. She devoted herself solely toafter meeting Michel Larionov, who was to be her lifelong companion for the rest of her life. In 1906, she took part in the Russian art exhibition at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, organized by Serge de Diaghilev. In December 1909, at the third Golden Fleece exhibition, Larionov and Goncharova launched neo-primitivism.From 1911 onwards, she took part in the Futurist movement, then in the creation of Rayonism,and launched the Queue d'âne movement, inspired by Russian and Oriental neo-primitivism. In June 1915, she left Russia for good and lived in Switzerland for two years. In 1917, she accompanied Diaghilev's troupe on tourin Spain and Italy, and moved to Paris with Larionov in 1918. In the1920s, she was one of the main painters for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and designed the sets for Stravinsky's Les Noces.The war and post-war years were a period of oblivion for Goncharova and Larionov. It wasn't until 1954, on the occasion of the great Serge de Diaghilev retrospectives in London.
