17th Century Floral Composition
Important and seductive floral composition in the tradition of the great Flemish still lifes of the XVIIᵉ century, featuring an abundant bouquet of polychrome flowers arranged in a sculpted vase resting on an entablature. In the foreground, a blue-and-white-decorated earthenware bowl accompanied by fruit provides an elegant touch of oriental refinement, much prized in Dutch Golden Age painting.
The artist here deploys the entire decorative vocabulary of the Nordic masters: variegated tulips, roses, peonies, anemones and country flowers stand out vividly against a deep brown background, in a subtle play of light and chiaroscuro.
The particularly eventful composition enlivens the canvas with a floral cascade effect characteristic of large Baroque bouquets.
The warm palette dominated by reds, pinks, oranges and ivory contrasts harmoniously with the dark background, giving the whole a remarkable decorative presence. Botanical details are treated with finesse, while impastos and glazes reveal a fine old technique.
The canvas shows a beautiful antique patina with coherent network of craquelures and wear from use.
Mounted on its antique stretcher on the reverse.
This work is in the tradition of Flemish still lifes inspired by the workshops of Jan Brueghel, Ambrosius Bosschaert or Rachel Ruysch, highly prized by collectors for their ornamental richness and symbolism of vanity and ephemeral beauty.
