Preparatory study for the figure at the bottom of one of the wall panels commissioned by the State from Cormon in 1893 to decorate the Paleontology amphitheater at the Paris Natural History Museum.

The theme chosen for the ensemble is the evolution of man from prehistory to the Iron Age. The panels are still there today, and the sketches are kept at the Petit Palais (notably the one for the pottery INV. PDUT1391).
