Carved And Gilded Wooden Frieze With A Monogram Featuring The Letter B

Carved and gilded wooden frieze featuring a monogram with the letter B of striking visual impact, characterized by an exquisitely Rococo style. This antique decorative element, carved from poplar and gilded, is crowned by a large stylized central shell (or fan), a classic motif of the Rococo repertoire, flanked by curling volutes that lend verticality. At the center stands out a smooth cartouche housing an elaborate intertwined monogram. The letters appear to be a B and perhaps an M (it is unclear whether this is a decorative element), rendered with sinuous, calligraphic lines. The lower section is the most complex. It features a grotesque mask or a feral face (resembling a lion or a mythological creature) with wings spread out on either side. This element serves as a visual anchor and adds a touch of solemnity and symbolic protection. The entire piece is dominated by “C” and “S” shapes, typical of the 18th century, which create a sense of continuous movement. There are no straight lines; every edge is shaped, crumpled, or swollen. There is an interesting contrast between the smooth, glossy surfaces of the gilding and the dotted or punched areas (such as the background behind the monogram and the latticework details on the sides), which serve to highlight the relief through the play of shadows.

In terms of shape and structure, this frieze could have come from the cornice of a frame or mirror, or it could be a celebratory element placed above an entrance to indicate the ownership of the family identified by the monogram. It is an object of high-quality craftsmanship that conveys opulence, prestige, and a taste for complex ornamentation, typical of 18th-century European aristocratic residences or their 19th-century revivals. It is carved from poplar wood and is in good condition with minimal losses consistent with its dating to the first half of the 1800s and its Italian origin.
