Carlo Ponti (att.à), Saint Mark's Basilica, Venice C.1870 Vintage Albumen Print Photograph
Vintage albumen print
San Marco Basilica in Venice, Italy
The photograph captures a scene of general bustle in St. Mark's Square, where a motley group of people can be seen, mixing Venetians and tourists. Their clothes - hats, suits and dresses - are typical of late 19th-century European fashion. Some are feeding pigeons, a common activity in the square, while others are just passing by, offering a naturalistic depiction of everyday life.
This print is attributed to Carlo Ponti (1823-1893) a Swiss photographer who set up in Piazza San Marco in Venice in 1848.
