Kuba Rug. Caucasus. Late 19th Century. 193 X 120 Cm
Superb Kuba rug from Azerbaijan in the Caucasus. Its decorative vocabulary is typical of late 19th-century production, as is the palette of hues that make it up.
On the central field, 2 large central medallions stand out. In the Caucasian tradition, they represent the sacred organization of space, the home or the clan. Each medallion features 5 rosettes arranged in a cross, complemented by other stylized floral motifs. The medallions are encircled by stepped, crenellated motifs whose function is to protect the family.
Also on the field, 3 distinct bands of 4 Caucasian Guls evoke family, descent and transmission.
Around the field is a magnificent, uninterrupted border of tangled hook motifs symbolizing protection. This is an impenetrable protective barrier that shelters all family members.
The knotted stitch is short, typical of 19th-century Caucasians. Wool on wool. Exclusively vegetable dyes in deep, luminous hues. Madder red, indigo blue, ivory, ochre yellow.
The piece is both light and supple, it's sensational.
In rather compact dimensions, this Kuba or Quba rug illuminates the space with its splendor and refinement.
Circa 1880
