Costume set, Order of Malta. Spain, probably early 20th century.
Tricorne hat bearing the label of the Félix del Hierro sewing workshop, located on Calle Barquillo in Madrid (Spain), with another branch on Calle Almirante in the same city. This workshop is known to have been in business until at least 1946. The set also includes a pair of epaulettes embellished with the Order's enamel insignia (like the tricorne hat) and a ceremonial sash or scarf with the insignia on the buckle. The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta (SMOM), known simply as the Order of Malta or the Knights Hospitallers, was recognized by Pope Paschal II in 1113. After provisional headquarters in Messina, Catania and Ferrara, the Order finally established itself in Rome in 1834. During the 20th century, the Order refocused on its mission of hospital care. -
