Albert Marquet - Original Drawing
Albert MARQUET (1875 - 1947), French painter
Oriental scene
Engraving on paper, signature stamp lower right.
Dimensions: 15.5 x 20 cm (on view)
Marquet proved to be an insatiable traveler, crisscrossing Europe with his brushes. His love of the Orient began in the summer of 1911 when he traveled Morocco on horseback. He returned in 1913. It was again in Algeria, in early 1920, that he met his future wife, Marcelle Martinet. From 1931 to 1938, the Marquet couple wintered in Algeria. From there, they travelled extensively to Morocco and Tunisia. From his many stays in North Africa, he left us intimate scenes of the daily life of its inhabitants, such as our drawing, where characters wrapped in cloth veils wander about, here dwellings, then a few palm trees on a hillock, with the Atlas mountains in the distance.
