Cusco School (xx) - Archangel Harquebusier
Oil and gold pigments on canvas. Original canvas.
The harquebusier archangels perfectly embody a transatlantic mysticism, where Old World celestial heraldry mingles with the roar of cannons in the new Andean setting. Beneath the silks, laces and brocades of a vice-regal, almost fairy-tale elegance, these creatures of light abandon the flaming sword to wield the arquebus, symbol of captured lightning and the hegemony of an empire that knows itself to be sacred. It's a syncretism of shattering plastic power: the angel, once an ethereal messenger, here becomes a soldier of cosmic brotherhood, whose gaze, with its impassive, almost mineral serenity, seems to bless the thunder of battle, while his fine feathered wings unfurl over the Collao landscape. In this iconography, war is divinized and faith armed with metal, creating a pictorial "flora" of strange and dazzling beauty, where the roar of the charge mingles with the song of cherubim in a perpetual guard of honor over the Andes.
- Image size unframed: 40 x 55 cm / 51 x 66 cm with custom frame.
