End Of XVIIe. François Silvestre . Framed Frontispiece
Artist: Francois Silvestre
The etching presented here was engraved by Nicolas Chateau, after a drawing by Charles François Silvestre ( 1667- 1738).
Son of the famous Israël Silvestre, he resumed his duties, but resigned in 1691 and moved to Paris, where he soon received lodgings in the Louvre.
He became Maitre à dessiner du Roi, des enfants de France et des Pages.
His drawings are not widely circulated, being for the most part in public collections.
Here he offered a set of landscapes for engraving, which were to be published in book form, as was the custom at the time.
Engravings after his works are not very common either, a fact corroborated by the quality of the discreet but refined framing actually carried out at the end of the 19th century by the prestigious Maison Sanson, founded in Paris in 1865, which still provides exclusive services to enhance works of art.
