Paperolles Reliquary Of Saint Joseph Of Leonessa - Circa 1800
A large central medallion houses the wax bust of the Capuchin friarSaint Joseph of Leonessa. The eyes are sulfides set in a soft, tinted wax. It must conceal a relic of our holy man. SaintJoseph de Leonessa (1556 -1612) was an Italian Capuchin priest, preacher and missionary.missionary. He died a saint and was canonized in 1746.
A relic of Saint Restitut accompanies our Capuchin. Tradition has it that Restitut came from Palestine with Saint Madeleine and a few others. In the first century, he was named as the first bishop of the ancient bishopric of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux.
Together in a paperolles montage reminiscent of analtar piece.
Dimensions with frame 34 cm by 32 cm and 11 cm deep.
A late 18th or very early 19th century work in an elegant frame probably from a convent in the Nice region, with a strong Italian influence.
