Mountain Landscape Painting, Antique Oil Landscape Painting, Washerwomen And River, XIX (qp739)

Artist: Leberecht Lortet (1828–1901)

The category antique paintings, landscape paintings, presented here features a 19th-century oil painting on canvas.

This is a 19th-century antique painting depicting a natural landscape, executed with remarkable pictorial sensitivity

and meticulous attention to detail.

The scene portrays an idyllic riverside landscape, with a gently flowing stream winding through ancient trees, rocks,

and lush vegetation, bathed in a warm, atmospheric light typical of 19th-century Romantic painting.

Characterized by harmonious colors and soft brushstrokes, the artwork conveys a strong sense of tranquility and

naturalism, evoking the unspoiled beauty of the 19th-century countryside.

In the foreground and along the path beside the stream, several washerwomen can be seen, captured during a moment of daily work.

The artwork is an oil painting framed with an antique gilded frame in fine gold leaf, original and contemporary to the painting.

This 19th-century antique painting is signed lower right by Lortet, Leberecht Lortet, a French landscape painter.

Leberecht Lortet (1828–1901) was born in Heidelberg, Germany, to French parents and lived for many years in Lyon, France.

A pupil of Alexandre Calame in Geneva, he exhibited from 1858 at the Salon de Lyon, and from 1859 to 1870 at the

Salon des Artistes Français. He favored mountain landscapes and closely studied the effects of light on lake waters

and rocky surfaces, clearly visible in this painting. Many of his works are preserved and displayed in French museums.

Both the antique frame and the painting have been professionally and carefully restored.
