Claude Galle, Large Pair Of Empire Period

Artist: Claude Galle (1759-1815)
Claude Galle, large pair of Empire period "Aux Hiboux" torches.

Very fine pair of Empire-period chased and gilded bronze torches known as "aux hiboux", attributed to Claude Galle (1759-1815).
From the circular base, embellished with a generous frieze of palmettes, emerges the plain sheathed stem, resting on three
claw feet.
The top, set with a ring trimmed with applique stars, is topped with three owls with outstretched wings, topped with a
cup and wick.

This beautiful model of owl torch, according to the literature, was particularly appreciated by Emperor Napoleon, who
took them with him on his campaigns.
A similar pair of torches is preserved at the Château de Fontainebleau, where they were inventoried in 1807 in the 2nd
salon of the Empress.salon de l'impératrice ( Inventory no. F 1151 C)
They are also found in the Emperor's private cabinet: "two pairs of bronzed and gilded torches with owls
and stars".and stars" (Fontainebleau, Museum Archives). They remain in place when the room becomes the Emperor's
bedroom.the Emperor's bedroom.

A pair of "flambeaux à hiboux" (owl torches), were inventoried by the bronzier Claude Galle in August 1799.
According to the inventories, owls are also referred to as "eagles".
