Giacomo Guardi, son of Francesco, continued the vedutistic tradition of the family workshop consistently into the early decades of the nineteenth century. His output on paper, gouache and tempera, forms an autonomous corpus distinct from his father's work, marked by a more subdued palette and a rapid, almost miniaturist handling.
The view depicts the island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, seat of the Mechitarist monastery founded in 1717, identifiable by the profile of the church and the adjoining buildings overlooking the lagoon. In the foreground, gondolas and a sailing vessel animate the lagoon scene, their figures recalling the typical repertoire of Guardi's macchiette. The autograph inscription on the reverse confirms the attribution, already supported by the critical essay of Prof. Egidio Martini.
