Francesco Zugno was among the leading figures of eighteenth-century Venetian painting, trained in the orbit of Giambattista Tiepolo, whose close collaborator and follower he remained. His pictorial language is distinguished by luminous tonality, softly modelled figures and a refined chromatic sensibility that place him among the most accomplished interpreters of the Venetian Rococo. The painting depicts the Transit of Saint Joseph, a devotional subject widely favoured in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, showing the death of the saint attended by the Virgin and the Christ Child. The vertical composition, intimate in format, reveals Zugno's full command in orchestrating figures within a luminous and spiritually charged space, with a warm, enveloping light that reflects directly the Tiepolesque tradition.
