An Ivory Netsuke Depicting A Monkey With Fruit
An ivory netsuke depicting a monkey holding a persimmon. The monkey is seated and holds a large kaki fruit between its right hind leg and left hand, with a satisfied expression. From the fruit extends a long stem with a leaf that falls over the animal’s back, an element that seems to amuse it. The surface of the body is finely incised, creating a contrast with the smoother, lighter areas of the face, the fruit, and the ears. The eyes are inlaid in horn. Signature engraved under the base, probably Masatomo.
