Boy With A Melon. Oil On Canvas, Late 17th–early 18th Century, Northern Italy.
This is a charming genre painting by a talented artist who tended to depict carefree scenes of everyday life; in this case, a charming young boy is shown cutting a melon. One can discern tangible stylistic similarities with the sublime painterly and portraiture styles of Vittore Ghislandi, known as Fra Galgario, particularly in the warm color palette used and the subject’s expressive candor.
The painting certainly merits further study. The canvas is in excellent overall condition, with a fairly recent relining, and is mounted in a beautiful, gilded, carved frame in the period style.
