Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) was one of the major French sculptors of the XIXᵉ century, an emblematic figure of the Second Empire and an acknowledged master of the neo-Renaissance style. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and soon noticed for his talent as a modeller, he developed a brilliant career between Paris and London, working for major manufacturers as well as for official commissions. A prolific artist, he excelled in female busts, decorative figures and objets d'art, combining sensuality, elegance and technical virtuosity. Director of works of art at the Manufacture de Sèvres from 1875, he had a lasting influence on the decorative sculpture of his time and trained many artists, including Auguste Rodin. His work, refined and abundant, remains one of the most representative of the artistic taste of the XIXᵉ century.
