This beautiful still life of peonies in copper kettles is the work of French painter Désiré Alfred Magne. He was a genre painter, specializing in still lifes, animals and flowers.
Born in Lusignan (Vienne), he studied at the École municipale des Beaux-Arts in Poitiers, then became a pupil of Cabanel and James Bertrand in Paris. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1879. A member of the Société des Artistes Français from 1894, he received an honorable mention in 1886. This success was confirmed in 1897 and 1907, when he won further medals for his paintings.
