Francis SWAINE was baptized in London on June 22, 1719 in St Botolth, London, although his
exact date of birth is unknown. By 1735 he was working as a messenger for the Council
of the Navy. He married the eldest daughter of Peter Monamy in 1749, like him his works are
inspired by Willem van de Velde II (1633-1707), like his contemporary Charles Brooking.
He exhibited in London from 1762 to 1783 forty-eight works at the Society of Artists and seventy-
three at the Free Society, of which he was a member.
