Baroque Chest Of Drawers In Carved And Gilded Wood, Sicily, Mid18th Century

Baroque chest of drawers in carved and gilded wood, Sicily, mid18th century

This Baroque-period chest of drawers, finely carved and gilded, was made in Sicily around the mid-18th century.
It features a bombé body, curved on the sides and front, and two drawers with gilt bronze locks finely chased with rocaille motifs. The original top is in shaped Lumachella di Sciarra marble. The chest stands on four sabre legs that continue the movement of the uprights, creating a sinuous and elegant profile.
The entire front and side surfaces are richly gilded, on red bole, and carved with a repeated overlapping semicircular pattern reminiscent of fish scales, producing a dense and luminous rhythmic texture. At the center and along the borders appear rocaille scrolls, vegetal cartouches, and scenes with musicians and small birds — all characteristic decorations of the period.
Of great elegance and rarity, this chest of drawers is strikingly luminous and decorative, easily adaptable to various interiors thanks to its compact proportions.
In good overall condition, it shows some fractures in the marble top, repaired in modern times.
