Set Of Empire Chairs, Stamped Henri Jacob (master 1779), France, Early 19th Century

Empire mahogany salon set, comprising a two-seater sofa and four armchairs (two not shown). The structures feature a refined neoclassical style, with winged caryatids supporting the straight arms. The seats are upholstered in yellow-checked velvet, in good condition. The frames are original and have not been restored. The armchairs are marked "H. Jacob" on the frame. Some frames still bear their original paper labels, which read: "À la Gerbe d'Or, rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, n° 276, ANDRY jeune, Paris". These mentions refer to a Parisian upholsterer and furniture dealer established in the famous Faubourg Saint-Antoine district.
Dimensions:
Armchairs: 91 × 61 × 70 cm, seat height: 44 cm
Settee: 95 × 122 × 80 cm, seat height: 55 cm
Henri Jacob (1753-1824), who became a master craftsman in 1779, was a cousin of the famous royal cabinetmaker Georges Jacob. He ran workshops on rue de Bourbon-Villeneuve until 1799 and rue de l'Échiquier until 1806. Contemporary sources such as the Almanach du commerce de Paris (1815) attest to his links with the Parisian upholsterers and furniture merchants of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine.
