Biedermeier Walnut Secretary Desk, Austria, Circa 1830
An exceptional Biedermeier secretary desk in walnut, with a magnificent matching veneer across the entire front. The drop-front features a segmented panel above a lower cabinet with two doors. The desk rests on tapered legs with gently rounded corners, and includes a wide upper drawer and a subtly contoured top. The interior is particularly refined: a central compartment in the shape of a Carrara marble temple, with brass capitals and frieze, forms the focal point. It is surrounded by small drawers, letter compartments, and arched pigeonholes. The hardware is brass. The secretary has been professionally restored and hand-polished with shellac.
