Japan- Edo period (1601-1868) circa early 19th century.Fumibako (letter box) in gold kinji lacquer and nashiji background with gold and silver hiramaki-e decorationsof bamboo stems and leaves accompanied by the uguisu character.
The interior is in honeynashiji lacquer.
The engraved silver-plated metal grips are adorned with a three-pointed star motif.
The uguisu character describes a small bird of the passerine family, "the warbler" (a type of nightingale)nightingale) symbolizing harmony with nature, peace and tranquility.Bamboo (take) is one of the three evergreens referred to by the Chinese as "winter's three friends".(along with prunus and pine) as an emblem of longevity. Above all, it representsuprightness and modesty, integrity combined with the suppleness to which the noble man should aspire.(bamboo bends under the snow, but doesn't break).
It is therefore an image of ideal harmony blending strength of spirit and inner humility...
