Italian Woman In Traditional Dress From The Ciociaria Or Abruzzo Regions, Holding A Spindle, 19th Century Watercolor

Italian woman in traditional dress from Ciociaria or Abruzzo, holding a spindle, 19th century

Watercolor and pencil on paper
Height: 27 cm, Width: 20.5 cm

Study depicting a Italian woman seated with a spindle, dressed in traditional costume likely from Ciociaria or Abruzzo. The white veil folded over her head, the apron layered over the dark dress, the sashes on her shoulders, and the bodice decorations evoke the folk costumes of the Apennine regions of central Italy, often grouped together in 19th-century costume series.

The spindle introduces a domestic theme much appreciated by traveling artists: the spinner, an image of rural life, women’s work, and preserved traditions. The calm, frontal pose gives the figure a simple, almost monumental presence.

The preparatory pencil sketch remains visible beneath the watercolor layers. The colors are applied in broad washes, striking a balance between documentary observation and decorative quality.

The sheet most likely belongs to a coherent set of figures in Italian costume, originating from a travel album that is now lost. Other sheets in the group bear inscriptions in French, a detail suggesting the work of a French-speaking artist active in Italy during the 19th century.

The series is part of an older tradition of collections dedicated to Italian folk costumes. In the Kingdom of Naples, as early as the Bourbon era, a keen interest developed in the depiction of local clothing, trades, and types, as expressed in the famous Raccolta di Varii Vestimenti ed Arti del Regno di Napoli published in 1773. This taste, which was at once ethnographic, picturesque, and travel-inspired, persisted throughout the 19th century.

Condition consistent with the era; slight sun fading of the paper and patina of age.
