The painting belongs to the Florentine artistic milieu of the first half of the 16th century, closely connected with the culture of Andrea del Sarto and, in particular, Domenico Puligo. Intended for private devotion, the composition draws upon models widespread within this circle, while interpreting them through a more distinctive language, characterized by clearly defined forms, incisive contours, and certain unusual and irregular inflections associated with that strand of Florentine painting later described by Federico Zeri as the “Florentine Eccentrics.”

Within this context stands the Master of Volterra, the conventional name given to the painter around whom Federico Zeri assembled a group of works beginning with the altarpiece of the Madonna and Child with Saints John the Evangelist, Clare, Francis and Lawrence in the church of San Pietro in Selci in Volterra. His artistic language combines motifs and influences primarily associated with Domenico Puligo and Andrea del Sarto, as well as Antonio del Ceraiolo, Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio and Michele Tosini.

The attribution of the present painting to the Master of Volterra is particularly supported by the physiognomies, which constitute distinctive “stylistic signatures” of the artist: small, widely spaced eyes, swollen eyelids, slender noses, small heart-shaped mouths, rounded projecting chins and softly curled hair.

More recently, Alessandro Nesi has proposed identifying the Master of Volterra with the Verrocchi workshop and, more specifically, with Giovambattista Verrocchi (Florence 1494–1569). Elena Capretti notes close affinities between the present painting and works associated with Giovambattista, including the Volterra altarpiece, the two Madonnas in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena, and those preserved at the Ospedale di Santa Maria Nuova and the Villa del Poggio Imperiale in Florence.

The painting is in excellent condition. Recent conservation removed the few earlier retouchings and the yellowed varnish, revealing a compact paint layer executed with broad brushstrokes and glazes, with gradual transitions that model the forms through a carefully studied chiaroscuro.
