Samaritaine At The Well, Oil On Panel First Half Of The 17th Century On Original Frame
Artist: Sphère De Ciro Ferri
Oil on panel depicting a scene from the Gospel according to John, in which Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. This work of considerable artistic interest can likely be attributed, based on its composition and the characterization of the figures, to the Roman Cortonist school of the mid-17th century; consequently, it is possible to suggest a certain affinity with Pietro da Cortona’s principal pupil, Ciro Ferri. The painting is of high quality, with well-proportioned figures in the foreground facing Jacob’s well, which is placed at the center of the composition, while a large classical column in ruins peeks out slightly behind it. The landscape opening up on the horizon leads toward a distant city with a fairy-tale atmosphere. The frame on which the panel is mounted is in red lacquer and is original and contemporary to the painting. The dimensions of the panel are: 22 cm x 32 cm. The dimensions including the frame are: 37 cm x 45 cm.
